This is the story of how my best friend Cyndi and I became best friends, 15 years ago:
Cyndi is a super connector, and she would host an annual "Noveween" party - a big Halloween party on November 1st.We had briefly met at a fashion fundraiser and she invited me to this epic party. (After the software engineer era, and before the ring designer era, I was a fashion designer.)
That year, Lady Gaga wore a dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards made entirely out of raw beef. I decided to attend the Noveween party in a meat dress. Of course, not with real meat! I sewed a meat dress from vegan leather, painted white marbling onto it, and dripped melted wax to create the perfect texture. I even made a steak hat and a pair of meat shoes. I had so much fun making the outfit, I almost doubted the party could top it!
This outfit turned out to be the ultimate ice breaker. Throughout the night, Cyndi's party guests, even the shy ones, would come up to me, with an easy opening line of: LOVE your meat dress. Before the end of the night, I was friends with everyone.
Cyndi, being the super connector that she is, loved seeing people make connections. She is the biggest people magnet I know. The way I instantly connected with all her friends earned me major street cred with her. From that night on, our vibes synced and we’ve been best friends ever since!
As a designer, I think about design as connectors - a lot.
I always imagine the conversations our rings would spark:
"I love your ring!"
"Thanks - it's made of silicone - it's soft!" [squeezes ring]
"No way!! I LOVE the forest design on it."
"Oh yes, we both love the outdoors and, look, " [flips ring over] "on the inside we have the coordinates of the forest where we had our first date."
It’s amazing how something as simple as what we wear can create connection - and sometimes even lifelong bonds!
